When you look at the Pittsburgh Pirates from the past two years, there are two ways to look at it. The first way is to realize that the Pirates have improved marginally since Clint Hurdle took over. When Hurdle took over for John Russell, he acquired a team that was coming off a 57-win season. In just two years, the Hurdle-led Pirates improved its record by 22 games.
The other way to look at it is that the Pirates have suffered back-to-back collapses. After a hot start in 2011, the Pirates suffered a collapses after the All-Star break. While the early success was cute, it was realized the majority of Pirates fans that it was an example of the Pirates playing over their head. After the overall good season, one would expect for the Pirates to take the next step in 2012 and finally snap the then 19-year losing streak.
Similar to 2011, the Pirates started off the season strong, and took the success into August where they were 16 games over .500. Once again, the success they achieved was all-for-not as they suffered an even bigger collapse.
This season is like the past two so far with the Pirates off to a hot start. Some fans won’t buy into the success until the Pirates prove they can keep it up until August or September, but as I’ve said the past two years, just enjoy the success they are having now. If you haven’t realized it by now, this is one fun bunch to watch.
