RIZZO: WPIAL Losing Fans’ Interests

by Michael Rizzo

The WPIAL is losing the interest of its fans. I know a lot of people can remember packed gyms and traveling to watch away games. Certainly everyone knows football and basketball crowds aren’t what they used to be. I know the WPIAL was really happy with the large crowds for the Basketball Finals, but not having those games on TV doesn’t showcase the games to larger audience. I’ve asked the WPIAL Director Tim O’Malley numerous times to come on my show, but he doesn’t care to venture north of Allegheny County. The future seems to point to less high school sports coverage in newspapers, more entertainment options, and college and pro sports on TV 24/7. If the WPIAL doesn’t get a forward thinker involved, interest in high school will continue to dwindle.

RIZZO: Big East Tournament

by Michael Rizzo

The 2010 Big East Tournament has already started for most teams; however, the Panthers will have to wait until Thursday night. The Big East Tournament has become nation’s best basketball conference tournament for two reasons. First, it has the best teams, and secondly they really play hard to win the title. The New York City marquee also helps the tournament. Pitt is already into the NCAA Tournament and should Pitt win their first game, it would set up a 9pm Friday night Semifinal against possibly West Virginia. My guest last night likes the Mountaineers in this tournament, and the more I think about them, I too think WVU has a good chance. Syracuse has to be the favorite and they normally play well in NYC, but there is just something about them that I think makes them upset prone!
