Gas Prices Take Another Jump at Pump

Local drivers were shocked yesterday as they pulled into gas stations and found prices increased for the second time in a month!

Gas prices throughout Armstrong County took another jump yesterday, representing the second highest jump in the last 30 days.

According to the Lundberg Survey of about 2,500 gas stations, the national average for a gallon of self-serve, regular gasoline was $3.57 on March 18. Yesterday’s jump took the current average price of $3.75 nearly 94 cents above the year-ago level.

In the last America’s Research Group poll, about three-quarters of Americans surveyed said they were shopping less due to rising gas prices.

Since consumer spending accounts for nearly two-thirds of the U.S. economy, rising gas prices will certainly have an effect on retail businesses throughout the county as discretionary purchases will be limited to pay for increased fuel costs.

The survey showed that rising gas prices are the biggest concern about the U.S. economy right now by 62 percent of those surveyed. Less than 15 percent worried about high unemployment and government spending.

Remember Pearl Harbor: 69 Years Ago Today!

According to historian Larry Shedwick, commemorative plaques like the one pictured above would often be awarded as prizes during carnivals in the past.

It is interesting to know about some individuals on that “Day of Infamy,” 69 years ago. Eighty-two Army and forty-two Navy nurses were caught in the attack on December 7. They cared for casualties alongside doctors and medics.

Army Nurse, 1st Lieutenant Elizabeth Murphy said, “We went on a twelve-hour day for two weeks. The afternoon of December 7, I went down to eat at about 2PM. My uniform and shoes were all blood-stained. I could only wash my hands!”

There were some interesting witnesses at the attack on Pearl Harbor. Some of them included: James Jones, author of “from Here to Eternity;” Jason Robards, Jr., actor, blown overboard while on USS Nevada; Jackie Robinson, as a civilian; Carl Olson, “Bobo”, future middle-weight boxing champion of the world, he was eleven years old; Dave Guard, original member of “The Kingston Trio” – a popular 1950s singing group, he was seven years old; Edgar Rice Burroughs, the originator and author of Tarzan, he was vacationing with his son. He stayed and became the oldest war correspondent at 67.

The day after the Pearl Harbor Attack was marked by the announcement of the first Pennsylvanian’s death there. It was Army Private George G. Leslie of Arnold. Let us not forget.
