West Kittanning Borough has three new auditors this year.
As recommended and approved by Council members during their rescheduled monthly meeting last night, auditors Carol Augustine, Cheri Lindsay, and Bob Venesky were appointed to serve.
Augustine ran a successful write-in campaign during the November 2011 General Election, whereas Lindsay and Venesky expressed interest in filling the other two vacancies.
Augustine will hold office for six years, Venesky four years and Lindsay two.
The new auditors will meet with Finance Committee members and Secretary/Treasurer Carly Cowan in a workshop session later this month to review the process. Councilman Bernie Bowser, Sr. said the audit must be performed by March 31 so that the Borough would be ensured to receive more than $26,000 of County Liquid Fuels funding.
Surveys have been conducted to choose which streets will be paved this Spring. Those streets surveyed include: Arthur Street, Pine Hill Road, Northern and Southern Avenue and Garfield Street.
Bowser, Sr. said some of those streets used to be designated as Legislative Routes, or LR’s.
“We’re trying to get some financing on behalf of the State funding that’s supplied to the County,” Bowser, Sr. “I’ve requested probably-a pretty good chunk of what would be needed to fulfill what paving we would like to do this year.”
A list of possible streets will be reviewed by Council before work is performed.
Venesky, who lives on Arthur Street and was a past auditor, doesn’t anticipate any problems with the yearly budget and looks forward to working with the other auditors.
“The three auditors who just resigned did a good job and never seemed to run into any problems, so I don’t foresee us running into any problems either,” Venesky said.
Council President Cliff Neal thanked those that expressed interest in the position. He explained how Venesky and Lindsay were found for the appointment.
“We brought it up that we needed to fill two auditor positions because Carol ran a successful write-in campaign. Bob expressed interested immediately and (Councilman) Ken (Trudgen) contacted somebody else (Lindsay) and she said ‘yes,’ so now they need sworn in and we’ll be good-to-go,” Neal said.
The appointments came after auditors Mickey Langham, Mary Lasher and Berdella McKinley resigned due to health reasons May 3, 2011.
During Mayor Bernie Bowser, Jr’s monthly report, it was reported that Hilltop Bar managers were warned twice on state Liquor Control Board violations. Because of these and intoxicated residents who have left the bar, Borough police have been asked to monitor the area closely.
There have also reportedly been several attempted vehicle break-ins, which has caused a police investigation.
Borough Police were not available at the meeting for further comment.

West Kittanning Borough council members unanimously last night appointed two residents and accepted one who conducted a write-in campaign during the November General Election to be the new Borough auditors.
