Council Considers Turning Over Property to Fire Hall

A decision may come as early as next month’s public meeting on a request to transfer the fire hall property of Kittanning Hose Company #4 to the fire department.

At the present time, Kittanning Borough owns the fire hall property.

In a letter addressed to Council, 2nd Assistant Chief Michael Swartz stated that the fire department officers and members met on September 26, 2019 to discuss the possibility of taking ownership of the building located at 1143 Orr Avenue.

Swartz stated that the fire department voted unanimously to pursue ownership of the building.

The fire department’s solicitor, James Owen, prepared the necessary documents to deed the building over the fire department.

Kittanning Borough Solicitor Ty Heller said that he just received the documents prior to Monday night’s meeting and had not fully reviewed them, but felt they are in order.

Council President Kim Chelsea did not call for a vote, but rather urged council members to consider it and discussion would continue at the November meeting.

Both Kittanning Hose Company #1 and Hose Company #6 own their own buildings. Hose Company #4 was the only fire department where the Borough maintained ownership of the property.

Heller said he would determine if there were any grants used for the building that would restrict the Borough from deeding the property over to the fire department.
