The former Kittanning High School football field has been sold to the Richard G. Snyder YMCA.
The Armstrong School District Board of School Directors made the decision at the September 9, 2019 public meeting. They accepted an offer of $15,000 for the property.
Directors had permanently closed Kittanning High School at the end of the 2015-16 school term. The school’s athletic field, field house, and tennis courts were declared unnecessary for school purposes.
The RGS YMCA entered an agreement to utilize the property on a lease arrangement, according to former Executive Director Jack Clevesy in an interview with the Kittanning Paper in February 2019.
“When we got the opportunity to take over the (former Kittanning High School) fields, tennis courts, and field house, then we started to take a look at the possibilities,” Clevesy said. At that time, the YMCA was looking to utilize a portion of the property for a boxing program. “We moved some weight-lifting equipment up there (to the field house) to see how many people would go up and utilize it. Quite a few people went up and utilized it. So now we are readdressing the area so we can get the (boxing) ring in there. That’s the next big step.”
The athletic complex is located across Orr Avenue from the former high school property. The Board had previous sold the 8.33-acre main facility to Emerald Gymnastics on August 21, 2018 for $27,111. At that time, ASD Superintendent Chris DeVivo said the sale did not include athletic complex and confirmed the athletic complex was being leased to RGS YMCA.
ASD Solicitor Lee Price said it was not necessary for the District to bid out the property because the school code allows for direct sale to a non-profit organization.
