Armstrong Athletics representatives Brian Shaffer and Jeff Southworth spoke at last night’s Kittanning Borough Council meeting. The group is seeking permission to use the ball fields this summer at Community Park.
“We would like to take them over to play baseball/softball games there,” Shaffer said. “Perhaps we can pursue federal or state grants to improve the fields. There is a Major League Tomorrow Fund and grants available from Pittsburgh Pirate Fields for Kids program.
The fields would continue to be maintained and mowed by borough.
Shaffer said the group plans on hosting tournaments this year. They would be responsible for all concession sales.
Borough Solicitor Ty Heller said the request is reasonable.
“Historically the fields have been used this way,” Heller said. He said the group would have to conform to insurance requirements.
Councilman David Croyle requested that the group stipulate what days and hours they wish to reserve the field.
The season begins on May 4. Work on the field would need to be done by mid-April. Heller told Council that the final vote for approval could be done at the April 1 meeting. said to put it on agenda for April meeting.
