There are only 12 openings for a new program, Energize, offered this summer at the Richard G. Snyder YMCA.
The program focuses on children ages 6-11 that has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 85% or more.
Healthy Living Coordinator Sarah Roudebush said the program will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 PM from June 11 through August 29. However, participants must be registered by this Friday, June 8.
“We get these kids in here, get them together, make it fun, make sure they make some friends while they’re here, and eventually, we can help them get into some programs at the Y that they are in a safe place where they can come, exercise, and have a good time,” Roudebush said.
She added that there is no cost to participate in the program.
“It includes a complementary membership for the entire family. We really want to make sure that it does become a lifestyle change so that’s why we include it for the entire household.”
Bethany Riggle, Director of Marketing, stressed the importance of juggling good nutrition with busy schedules.
“As a mother of four kids, we’re constantly running and doing something. The majority of families are the same way. We have so many foods at our fingertips, but not necessarily the most healthy ones. This really gives the parents a better understanding of how to provide healthy nutritious foods and meals for their kids evening with their crazy busy lifestyle,” Riggle said.
Parents interested in enrolling their child in the program should call the RGS YMCA at 724-545-9622 or stop in at their 1150 North Water Street location in Kittanning. Additional information is also available at www.rgsymca.org.
