(VIDEO) Kayak Found Floating in Allegheny River

Volunteer brings kayak to the bank of the Allegheny River in Manorville after receiving report of a capsized boat floating downstream last evening.

Emergency rescue teams were dispatched when a kayak was seen floating upside down in the middle of the Allegheny River near the boat launch area of Manorville.

9-1-1 dispatchers said they were notified at 6:22 PM last night with the report of a capsized boat floating down the river.

Manor Township Fire Department and Police, East Franklin, Applewold, Kittanning Hose Company #1, and West Kittanning Fire Department were summoned for the rescue. East Franklin coordinated efforts on the west side of the river while Manor provided coordination along the east bank. Larry Rice, Emergency Management Agency Representative for Manor Township, assisted in the retrieval.

According to Manor Township Police Officer Steven Cippel, no one was in the kayak.

“When I got here, there was already an individual out there retrieving the kayak. When he brought it back in, he said there was no one inside. There was nothing that showed that there was anybody in it; no paddles. So based on that, we decided it probably blew off a dock somewhere.”

Cippel said the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission were contacted to come and take possession of the kayak. He said there was no registration number or identification markings to indicate ownership.
