The Armstrong River Hawks varsity hockey team is off to a good start this season, posting a 3-1 record in their first four games. On Thursday the River Hawks will look to extend their winning ways against Franklin Regional on a special night at the Belmont.
This week, the Belmont Complex is celebrating their 50 year anniversary with activities happening all week.
On Thursday, two teams that have called the Belmont Ice Rink their home will help celebrate the anniversary. Freeport and Armstrong have called the Belmont their home and both teams will be competing this Thursday.
Thursday’s activities will start with a meet-and-greet session with multiple prize giveawawys starting at 5:30 P.M. After that, the official puck drop by Don Zack Sr. of Freeport at 7:00 P.M. will kick off the first game of the double header.
Jon Spangler of Armstrong will drop the puck at 9 P.M. before the River Hawks game. Both Zack and Spangler were the area’s first high school hockey coaches. The singing of the National Anthem at 7:00 P.M. and welcoming of special guests until 9:00 P.M., prior to end of the evening at 10:30 P.M.
This season, the River Hawks have moved from class AAA in the PIHL to this year playing in class AA. Head Coach Lee Grafton thinks that this year the classes shouldn’t matter much.
“I honestly feel like the competition is probably just as good in AA as it is in AAA this year. I think what it comes down to is that we would have a team in either classes. We have eleven seniors this season, that’s a lot of experienced players,” Grafton said.
Festivities will begin at 5:30 PM with the first game (Freeport) beginning at 7:00 PM and then Armstrong will begin at 9:00 PM.
