Robert C. Silvis, 72, of Dayton, passed away Monday, April 16, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born February 18, 1940 in Dayton, PA to Harry Maxwell and Cora (Rupp) Silvis.
Robert was a lifetime resident of the area and graduated from Dayton High School in 1958. He was a member of the Ford City National Guard and Army Reserves and also belonged to the Masonic Seneca Lodge 805. Robert was a welder by trade and was involved in law enforcement in Armstrong County. He and his wife, Susan, were the owners and operators of Silvis and Son Meat Packing since 1975. Robert retired from the Pennsylvania State Game Commission where he was employed as a farm game manager and deputy game protector. The woods were his sanctuary and while he enjoyed fishing, his passion was hunting, especially with his English Setter, Duke.
Robert was actively involved in wildlife conservation initiatives and was awarded the title of Conservationist of the Year in 1979. Robert built and designed his camp, Camp Longshot, and had wonderful memories of times spent there with family and friends. However, his happiest times were those spent traveling and hunting with his wife and his children. Robert’s life came full circle after he became connected with his oldest son, Mark Pennington and his wife Linda, and his granddaughter, Whitney Doush and her husband Craig. Those who knew Robert will always remember his caring spirit and great love for the outdoors, and he will be greatly missed, especially by his faithful companion Yorkie, Sammi.
His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 52 years, Susan (Heilman) Silvis, who he married September 18, 1959; five sons: Mark Robert Pennington and wife, Linda, of Dayton, Jeffrey Todd Silvis and companion, Kathy, of Kittanning, Robert Maxwell Silvis and wife, Mary, of Kittanning, Jonathon Lee Silvis and wife, Ronna, of Kittanning, and Andrew Dwane Silvis and wife, Wanda, of Dayton; two daughters: Julianne Renee Silvis-Bryant and husband, William, of Brockton, Mass., and Christina Lynn Silvis and companion, Mike Koss, of Dayton; nine grandchildren: Chase Silvis, Whitney Dosch, Bob, Sean and Phillip Silvis, Heather Landstrom, Ashley Elwood, Alison Jones and Adam Silvis; great-grandson, Nathaniel Jones; sister, Judy Silvis-Walker and husband, Ron, of Fresno, CA; four nephews: David, Alan and Mike; and niece, Pam.
