Two Dayton residents are dead today following a two-vehicle crash yesterday afternoon in Cowanshannock Township.
LaRue J. Stewart, 74, and James A. White, 61, both of State Route 85, Dayton, PA, were traveling east on Route 85, approximately ¼ mile west of Rural Valley when the crash occurred at the intersection of Route 85 and North Avenue. A 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck pulled out from North Avenue in front of them, causing their vehicle to hit the truck on the passenger door.
According to the Armstrong County Coroner’s Office, both subjects sustained blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen. They were both pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Brian K. Myers.
The investigation is ongoing by Trooper Bradley Walters of the Pennsylvania State Police. According to Walters, the Troop D CARS (Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist) special unit was dispatched to analyze the accident scene. This resulted in Route 85 being closed from approximately 2:30 until 6:00 PM.
According to Armstrong School District Transportation Coordinator Charles Pepper, the closure of Route 85 resulted in limited bus service from Shannock Valley Elementary School during the afternoon hours. Parents were notified to pick up their children at the school.
The coroner’s office was assisted at the scene by Rural Valley Fire Department, Dayton Fire Department, Citizen’s Ambulance, and the Armstrong County Sheriff’s Department.
Lefdahl Funeral Home in Indiana is handling the arrangements for both individuals.
