Museum to Host “Memories of World War II”

by Nathan Lasher

The Armstrong County Historical Museum located at 300 North McKean Street in Kittanning will host “Memories of World War II” this Saturday from 12PM until 4PM and Sunday from 1PM until 4PM.

Several WWII Veterans are planned to attend the event throughout the weekend in order to share their stories including a gentleman from the 101st Screaming Eagles. Also, weather permitting, there will be an authentic Bantam Jeep.

Another attraction coming to the “Memories of World War II” event is Larry and Kay Shedwick’s extensive collection of World War II memorabilia. The Shedwicks deal, mainly, with memorabilia from the home front. Recently Larry has been attempting to start World War II re-enactments in the local area. ““We’re just scratching to get something started in this vicinity,” said Shedwick during an interview last week. “They have a Civil War re-enactment group here in Armstrong County, but my wife and I are the only two World War II re-enactors that are here. We dress in costume; I’m a Civilian Defense Air Raid Warden, and my wife is a World War II Red Cross Volunteer Nurse. We speak to the people, tell them stories, and display the memorabilia that we have.”

Anyone interested in reenacting or anyone who has memorabilia to display should contact Larry Shedwick at 724-763-8244. For updated information on Museum exhibits and events, interested persons can contact the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogical Society at 724-548-5707.
