Fatal Accident Closes Route 422

An accident that claimed the life of an Armstrong County man shut down Route 422 for several hours yesterday afternoon.

A 2000 white Honda Odyssey van driven by an unidentified female crossed the center line of the roadway approximately 300 feet east of Cunningham Road in Armstrong Township, Indiana County.  The van collided with a maroon 2004 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Bernard Gress ( approximately 65 years old and reported to be from the Elderton-Rural Valley area). Gress was killed on impact.

According to family members, Gress was a delivery driver for the Indiana Gazette.

Fire crews from Elderton and Indiana were on the scene to assist with rescue efforts.  Medical helicopters were also brought in to fly the unidentified female to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The investigation is continuing. No other details were available at press time.
