Joseph Elwood Reedy, age 88, of Templeton, PA, died, Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.
He was born February 27, 1921, in Boggs Twp., Armstrong Co., PA to Charles David and Mary B. (Hegginbottham) Reedy.
Mr. Reedy served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theater. He took part in eight battle campaigns, beginning in North Africa against Rommel, the invasion of Sicily, the landing at Normandy on D Day and was present when the United States liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and it was pinned on him by General Eisenhower. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in the line of duty and it was pinned on him by General Patton. For over 30 years, Joe was employed as an electrician for Snyder Electric. Mr. Reedy was a member of the New Castle Consistory, the Masonic Lodge #243 of Kittanning, the PA Gun Collectors Association, the National Rifle Association, and was a life member of Pinecreek Sportman’s Club. He was an avid gun collector and loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Elaine (Walker) Reedy whom he married November 17, 1945; a son, Charles Reedy and wife Betty of Templeton; a daughter, Carole Collar and husband Walter of Templeton; three grandchildren, Lisa Damore and husband Dan, Angela Wolfe and husband Terry, and Ashley Collar; five great-grandchildren, Kyla Copeland, Gavin Neal, Zachary Damore, Alex Damore, and unborn Brison Wolfe; two sisters, Freda Slagle of Templeton and Velma Cochran of Kittanning; and a niece, Diane Parenti of Pittsburgh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George Reedy, Simon Reedy, an infant brother and a sister, Dora Fox.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Bauer Funeral Home, 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning, PA, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 PM.
Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM at the funeral home where funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2010 with Rev. Don Bregetti officiating.
Interment will follow at Cochran Cemetery, Boggs Twp., Armstrong Co., PA, where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Honor Guard.
