Last night at KHS, the Kittanning Wildcat Varsity Basketball team clawed their way to a 49-39 win over the Ford City Sabers bringing their season record to 5-4.
After being down 9 – 15, the Sabers outplayed the Wildcats and staged a comeback during the second and third periods. Ford City Juniors Kent Commodore and Beriah Good played major roles in helping the Sabers score 26 points compared to the Wildcats’ 16. At the end of the third period, Ford City led Kittanning 35 – 31.
During the fourth period, Kittanning’s defense was able to hold Ford City to scoring only four points. At the same time, the Wildcats’ shots began to fall on target. Junior Sam McCanna nailed a clutch three-pointer in order to shift the game’s momentum and bring the score to Ford City 37 Kittanning 36. At this point, Junior Nathan Stolitza went on a shooting spree, sinking a three point shot to give the Wildcats the go-ahead score of 37 – 39. He continued to score 10 more points that period, including going 6 for 6 at the free throw line and expanding the Wildcats’ lead until the buzzer sounded. The final score rested at Ford City 39 Kittanning 49.
“We didn’t shoot very well in the third, but we came out strong in the fourth period,” said Kittanning Varsity Basketball Head Coach Bill Henry. “We limited Ford City to 4 points, Nathan Stolitza was 6 for 6 from the free throw line, and Sam McCanna hit a clutch three pointer. It’s great when you can finish a game like that.”
Kittanning has a section game versus Hampton this Friday at KHS. Hampton is ranked #2 in the WPIAL and were last year’s AAA Champions.
